Estimated Chargeable Income (ECI) is your company’s estimate of its taxable income for a financial year, after deducting tax-allowable expenses. Most Singapore companies must file it with IRAS within three months of their financial year end.
The good news? Some companies qualify for an exemption, and the test for who is exempt is straightforward.
Does Your Company Have to File ECI?
Most Singapore companies do, but IRAS grants an ECI filing waiver if your business meets both conditions simultaneously:
ECI Filing Waiver Condition | Exemption Threshold |
Condition 1: Annual Revenue | Your annual revenue is $5 million or less for the financial year |
Condition 2: ECI Amount | Your ECI for the Year of Assessment is nil ($0) |
Both conditions must hold at the same time. For instance, revenue of $3 million with an ECI of $20,000 means you still need to file. Similarly, a nil ECI on revenue of $6 million also requires a filing.
Key Deadlines & Potential Risks
The Due Date: Your ECI is due within 3 months of your financial year end. If your financial year ends on 31 December, your ECI filing deadline is 31 March.
What If You Don't File? Skipping ECI when required does not make the obligation go away. IRAS will issue a Notice of Assessment (NOA) based on their own estimate of your income. You will then be required to pay the assessed tax within one month, even if you disagree with the estimated amount.
Dormant or Loss-Making Companies: Having a quiet year or trading at a loss does not automatically exempt you. You must still evaluate whether your annual revenue crossed the $5 million threshold.
